The STEAM Department hosts STEAM Cafés once a month – a time for students to meet with female leaders in STEM fields and learn about their research or work. STEAM Cafés are a wonderful opportunity to open our students' minds to new careers and introduce students to STEM role models. Also, STEAM Cafés are a great way to invite community members into our building without impacting class schedules or curriculum
This week's STEAM Cafe welcomes Dr. Lindi Mujugira, Ph.D, STEM Liaison, Program Manager, Adjunct Math Faculty at Bellevue College.
Dr. Mujugira writes:
"I love science and I value education. I have a passion for Formula One car racing. I grew up with a love for math and science with the support of my parents who were educators and encouraged us to work hard and reach our goals in life.
My college education journey started with completing my B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. I then did an MPhil and Ph.D. at the University of Lancashire, U.K, in the Department of Built Environment.
I worked as an engineering consultant for eight years in Southern Africa. One key project I was involved with was the airport extensions, soccer stadia and underground high-speed train network, in preparation for the 2010 FIFA soccer world cup games in South Africa.
I currently live and work in Seattle – at Bellevue College where my role is Program Manager and Adjunct math professor. I work primarily with our STEM to Stern program. The goal of the program is to promote continued enthusiasm for STEM fields by way of connecting students to industry scientists and mentors, helping students plan their career path, acquire professional skills in communication, learn research skills and to be each other’s resource. The program aims to engage students in real-world inquiry projects as early as possible in their studies to help maintain their interest in STEM career pathways.
I serve as a faculty advisor for the Association for Computing Machinery - Women student chapter.
My mission in life is to help students reach their full potential, particularly those disadvantaged by circumstance, to reach their dream goals in science and engineering."
We look forward to meeting Dr. Mujugira
