Right now, more than 98 million adolescent girls around the world are not in school. I see myself in these girls. I see my daughters in these girls. I know a lot of you see yourselves and your families in them, too. That’s why today on the International #DayoftheGirl, the @ObamaFoundation is launching the @GlobalGirlsAlliance—a program to empower adolescent girls around the world through education. We believe that change happens from the ground up, so we’re working to support grassroots leaders and to spur action from people like you, all around the world. We can accomplish more together than we can on our own, so I hope you’ll join our alliance—because the future of our world is only as bright as our girls. #GlobalGirlsAlliance
Happy International Day of the Girl!

Tomorrow, Oct 11, is International Day of the Girl and we’re proud to have had something to do with Seattle’s recognition of the event. Check out this 2012 press release about the First Ever “Day of the Girl” Proclaimed by City of Seattle …with the help of LWGMS students! International Day of the Girl aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. We met Captain Bass today and she was A-W-E-S-O-M-E!
After visiting classrooms, Ms. Ali facilitated a tv-interview-style Q&A with Capt. Bass and her answers, stories, and candor commanded the room!
Here are a few of her many great tips and takeaways… “Don’t let anything stand in your way.” As a child of eight, Beverly Bass knew she wanted to fly and had to climb over many hurdles and bust through many stereotypes to get there. Her goal in life was to “fly the biggest plane made,” and she did.
She always kept the knowledge that “she could fly as well as the guys” with her.
Captain Bass was turned down for jobs with the explanation of “what would the wives of the pilots think?” many times.
Captain Bass’ first official job – in the 1970s – was flying for a morgue. A mortician walked into a hanger in Texas full of pilots and asked if one of them would fly a dead body to Arkansas. Captain Bass volunteered. She got the job because none of the men would do it. She spoke up and grabbed her chance. She flew small planes with single dead bodies in them for two years. “Power through challenges and don’t let people tell you “you can’t.”” “There isn’t anything you can’t do today. There may be obstacles or roadblocks in your way, but I’m here to tell you you can get through them. So many things have changed...even if we don’t feel like we’re making progress, we really are. We truly have.” She added this at the end: “In high school I was never a cheerleader or selected for clubs or awards, but at my 20th reunion, I was named most successful alum.” (The moral of THAT story, of course, is that popularity isn’t “where it’s at”…hard work and dreaming big IS “where it’s at!”) Thank you, Captain Bass, and the Alhadeff Family for this amazing experience!
